As many of you know, Kansas is phasing out the old raised (embossed) license plates. This means if you have an embossed plate, you will most likely be receiving a new license plate at renewal time. (Some embossed plates will be replaced later, such as Veterans, Personalized, etc.) Here’s how this works now that the counties do not have license plates in our offices to give you.
You will renew your plate as usual, either with the app, in the office, or through the mail. When we process your renewal, you will receive the decal and registration receipt in our office as usual, but you will be issued a temporary paper version of your new license plate. The actual hard plate will be mailed to you from a different source within 30 days (usually within 7-10 business days). KEEP THE REGISTRATION RECEIPT AND DECAL IN YOUR VEHICLE, and when you receive the hard plate, put the decal from the registration receipt on the new plate. This is the part in which County offices have seen the most confusion. Many customers are contacting our offices and telling us that they never received their decal. County offices will always give you your decal when you renew, it is attached on your new registration receipt.
When you renew your plate on-line or through the mail, you will receive a large brown envelope from the County that will have the paper version of your new plate AND your registration receipt containing the decal. Again, you will need that decal to place on the hard license plate when it comes to you.
